As I was researching a story for NewsRealBlog about an 82 year-old man in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, who may spend the rest of his life in prison for shooting one of two illegal alien criminals who were stealing his flatbed trailer, I happened upon the minutes of a recent Wheat Ridge City Council meeting that discussed some of the effects of medical marijuana in their community. Coloradoans passed Amendment 20 to the Colorado state constitution in November 2000 authorizing the medical use of marijuana for persons suffering from debilitating medical conditions. About 30,000 people in Colorado currently possess valid Registry ID cards that enable them to legally cultivate and use marijuana, which is a very tiny fraction of the 5,000,000 or so people who live in the state. But the demand for these “Stay Out of Jail” cards is very high. Demand is so high, in fact, that the Office Of Vital Records will no longer review applications, issue receipts, answer questions, or accept applications. An overwhelming majority of the 30,000 or so legally registered medical marijuana cultivators/users are male (74%) and relatively young (average age overall – 40). Over 90% of them listed “severe pain” as the medical reason why they needed to smoke marijuana. These data are consistent with studies showing that men are more likely to use marijuana than women, and young men more likely to use marijuana than older men.
