It’s 8:52 AM as I write this. Nine years ago on this day, the North Tower of the World Trade Center had been hit already (at 8:56 AM) and was burning furiously. At 9:03 AM, the South Tower was also hit.
I remember where I was and what I was doing when this happened. Everyone does. It is a seminal event in our lives and the life of our nation. Two thousand nine hundred seventy-four innocent people died that day, at the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon, and on the airliners.
Reliving the horror of that day is emotionally exhausting, and I didn’t lose anyone close to me on that day. The sounds and imagery are horrifying, but I feel compelled to watch and listen every year on the anniversary of the attack. I must. It is my duty. It is the very least I can do.
I don’t enjoy it. Not one bit. It’s an old wound that never heals, and I’d much rather be doing and thinking about something else, anything. But what sustains me are the stories of courage and goodness that came out of all that carnage and chaos.
God save and protect the survivors, their families, and the families of the slain.
